The 2022 Hampton Beach

Master Sandsculpting Competition

I was asked what I wanted to do for Father’s Day and my first thought was the annual Master Sandsculpting event held at Hampton Beach! It was a perfect day shared with family and now I get to share it with you. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I think I am going to let the pictures and video do most of the talking for this post!

I have always admired anyone that can paint or sculpt. To be able to envision a piece and make it come alive in multiple dimensions seems like a true gift. I hope the pictures and video give you a sense of just how gifted the artists at this annual event are.

Hampton Beach

Hampton Beach is one of five state-managed beaches along New Hampshire’s short but beautiful coastline. All of the beaches are well-maintained and worth a visit. Hampton is by far the busiest of the five with the other beaches offering a quieter feel with a little less commercial influence.

The Artists

The Sea Shell Stage is located in the center of the beachfront area and the Sandsculpting event is held right next to it. It is well organized and spread out for viewing. Spectators are allowed to walk behind a rope line and around the artists as they work their magic.

The wires on the tops of the sculptures are there to discourage birds from landing on them and causing damage. It is incredible to think of the passion and effort that goes into these works of art and they all eventually melt back into the beach as if they were never there.

I was torn between two pieces that spoke to me, but honestly, I felt like every one of them was incredible. Ultimately, I voted for this piece titled, “Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world,” by John Gowdy

There are several awards that are given and substantial cash prizes are won. There is the Solo Competition Award, The People’s Choice Award, The Sculptor’s Choice Award, and a Governor’s Award. The stories behind each artist and the history of the event can be found on the Hampton Beach Village District website.

Mélineige Beauregard was the overall winner of the event with her piece titled, “I am life.”

All of us were getting pretty hungry so we opted to sit on the balcony at the Purple Urchin. It is a great spot to eat lunch and people watch which is inevitable at Hampton. You get a bird’s eye view of the Seashell Stage and beach with each meal!
