Dixville Notch

Every four years, Dixville, New Hampshire makes the national news for their “First in the Nation” voting status. This year’s vacation would take us right through the heart of it all including The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, Dixville Notch, and Table Rock.

There is no shortage of New Hampshire wonders to explore in this area. Dixville Notch State Park provides plenty of hiking and beautiful waterfalls to enjoy. The Balsams Grand Resort and Hotel is stunning and sits behind beautiful Lake Gloriette.

Table Rock

We explored plenty of New Hampshire’s gems up in the Great North Woods Region, Table Rock is one that is hard to put into words!  My daughter and I moved Table Rock to the top of our to-do list and started our hike with a mix of excitement and nervousness! I am generally not afraid of heights, but if you have never been to Table Rock, it is a bit of a step into the unknown.

We chose trail 50 which is just a little west of Lake Gloriette. The trail was well marked and gave both of us a good workout to the top. It was a pretty steady climb to the top and probably took about 45 minutes to an hour to climb.

Eventually, we encountered a young local woman that informed us we were getting close to the top. I don’t know that this is an official description, but she began to explain the “three death zones” on Table Rock with each getting progressively more serious as you walk your way out to the end. I think both of our hearts skipped a beat, but we were determined to experience it for ourselves.

Table Rock

We reached the rocky outcrop before long and it was nothing short of amazing! Route 26 snakes through the heart of Dixville Notch. Lake Gloriette and the Grand Resort are in full view and you are surrounded by nothing but mountains. The combination of the scenery and the walk to the point will definitely get your heart thumping. It isn’t for the faint of heart and should be taken seriously, but it wasn’t a tightrope walk either.

As I sat out on the end snapping pictures and soaking it all in, I noticed a small rock with the words “Live your best life!” written on it. It was a perfect message to cap off our latest adventure.

Great photos, Tim. Sounds like a great place to “face your fear” of high places. It looks like the view is definitely worth the hike.
