Bretton Woods

This post allows me to check another New Hampshire ski mountain off the bucket list! We were excited to get out for our first runs of the year and explore Bretton Woods. Bode Miller, former Olympic legend of downhill and slalom skiing, has close ties to Bretton Woods. 

Covid was of course still in the news. The State of New Hampshire has worked with ski resorts to develop guidelines to keep everyone safe. Masks are required and lifts are managed to maintain social distancing. 

The drive North on I93 is always a treat! The excitement builds as you see the first peaks of the White Mountains and you know you are getting close. 

Mount Washington looked as picturesque as ever as we pulled into the entrance to Bretton Woods. The GoPro and camera were ready for a busy day!

It didn’t take long to get our tickets and the lines were surprisingly reasonable given the challenges of COVID. Before long we were on the lift looking forward to our first run of the season! 

Amazing Views

We reached the summit and pulled over to soak in the winter wonderland in front of us. The snow cover on Mount Washington and the surrounding Presidential Range was stunning. I hope my pictures give you some sense of the incredible natural beauty of the area.

Packed Powder

The trails were covered in packed powder and groomed to perfection! There was no ice to be seen for the entire day. There was plenty of room on the slopes with lots of wide trails that let skiers spread out and go at their own pace.

We opted for the Gondola for our second run. It was loaded by arriving party so that you never road with anyone you didn’t arrive with. At times, only one person was in a gondola. It was nice to see the resort taking things seriously. Everyone was having fun and being patient and respectful. 

The Gondola allowed us to warm up and break out the camera to capture more of the awesome scenery. It was -10 but we were dressed for it and there was no wind which was nice. 

I had never viewed Mount Washington from an angle that revealed the Cog Railway. The railway stood out against the white background. The Omni Mount Washington Hotel and Resort is at the lower left of the picture above. There is something about being at the top of a ski mountain that gives you such a different perspective and appreciation for Winter’s beauty.

Landmarks & Historical Markers

I mapped out 12 new historical markers to visit during the day. The Mount Washington Hotel marker provided this sweet opportunity for another memorable picture. I would encourage you to stop once in a while and check some of them out for yourself.  “Cruising New Hampshire History” is a great resource by Michael A. Bruno.

While I am not much of a Nordic Skier, I understand that Bretton Woods has a world-class system of trails and ski school. I would definitely recommend you visit Bretton Woods, you won’t be disappointed.  You will come home with some great pictures and memories!  Visit my post on Wildcat Mountain for another skiing adventure.
